ErpZeroZA showcase · fictitious company, real rules

South African books, the way an accountant expects them.

Karoo Kettle Co. makes enamel kettles in Nieu-Bethesda. Its books run on ERPNext with the free ErpZeroZA app: one tax template per VAT201 field, SARS field numbers on the return, and a careful move off Xero. Sign in and look around. Every figure is made up; every rule comes from the VAT Act and SARS's own guides.

The VAT201 tour

Five minutes, one tax period

Open the Sep–Oct 2026 return and follow along.
1
Open the return
Go to Value-added Tax Return and open Karoo Kettle's Sep–Oct 2026 return. The fields use the numbers on SARS's VAT201, as set out in the GEN-ELEC-04-G01 completion guide.
2
Field 2: R6,500 zero-rated
Design work for a UK retailer. A service to a non-resident is zero-rated under section 11(2)(l) of the VAT Act, so no VAT is charged, but it still belongs on the return.
3
Field 2A: R18,000 exported
Forty kettles sent to Windhoek, zero-rated as a direct export under section 11(1)(a)(i). Keep the documentary proof of export that SARS asks for.
4
Field 14: R9,000 input VAT on the kiln
A new enamelling kiln is a capital purchase, so its VAT goes in field 14. It's big enough to turn this period into a refund of R8,550.
5
Click through to the invoices
The tax template on each invoice decides its field, so the return is built from the books, not typed in. Click the 🔍 next to any field to see the invoices behind it.
